Kanchanaburi

The mountainous Kanchanaburi, Thailand’s third largest province covers approximately 19,473 sq KM and borders Myanmar (Burmar) to the west of Bangkok. The compact provincial capital (about 130 km - a comfortable two-hour drive from Bangkok) is both the site of the world-famous “Bridge Over the River Kwai”, immortalized in books and movies, as well as the gateway to a region of rugged natural beauty.

Attractions:

  • Sai Yok National Park

    The park covers approximately 300-square-kilometers and contains several interesting caves. The park has dense forests, including majestic teak trees and an abundance of small mammals such as squirrels, bats and deer, as well as numerous bird species.

  • Sai Yok Waterfall

    It is located 104 kilometers away from the town. The water flows directly into Khwae Noi River. 8 meters high and much water all year around especially from July to September.

  • Sai Yok Noi Waterfall

    It is also dubbed as Khao Phang Waterfall. It is situated 60 kilometers from town via Highway No. 323. The place is the best to visit between July and September.

  • Tum Dao Va Deung

    300-400 meters deep and divided into 8 rooms!!! The name of each room comes from shape and character of rocks. Most of them are white. TUM LAVA, a cave is on the side of Khwae Noi River, 75 kilometers away from Kanchanaburi City. The entrance to the cave is a bit narrow although the interior is spacious with several chambers including the music chamber, the throne chamber, and the curtain chamber with stalactites and stalagmites in full display.

  • Pang Chang Sai Yok

    Not only are there Elephant show everyday from 9am.-4pm, but also there are elephant riding opportunity, which is very popular for many tourists who have never ridden elephant before.

  • KHO KHAD PASS (Hell Fire Pass) Memorial Museum

    This is a part of the Death Railway that was constructed during the Second World War using POW labor to cut through the mountain. The site is located in a thick forest near Km. 66 of the Sai Yok-Thong Pha Phum Road (Highway No. 323). Along a 4-kilometer walking trail made by the Allied prisoners visitors can envision the difficulties faced in constructing the Death Railway using simple tools. The pass is approximately 500 meters long and 26 meters deep. In 1943 Australian POWs employing hand drills, picks and shovels, baskets and dynamite completed it within six weeks. There is also a museum displaying contemporary photographs, maps, models, illustrations, etc. from the period. Open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

  • Erawan National Park

    The national park is 65 kilometers from Kanchanaburi along Route 3199. The park, covering 550-square-kilometers, is the site of the seven-tiered Erawan waterfall, one of Thailands loveliest waterfalls

  • Erawan Waterfall

    The 7 levels of this stunning waterfall drops 1,500 m. down steep-sided cliffs. It is surrounded by beautiful forest with many types of trees and orchids. There is a trail as far as the 6th level and from there you have to scramble up the cliff to reach the 7th level.

  • Wang Bahdan Cave

    It is a large limestone cave with its narrowly accessible opening. It is 500 meters long. Inside the cave, there are several separated chambers.

  • Phartat Cave

    It is 8 kilometers from Erawan waterfall. At 720 meters above sea level, it is an impressive cave filled with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, and limestone geology is clearly displayed on the walls. Visitor should visit this cave before 3pm. And it takes about half to one hour for this trip.

  • Thong Pha Phum National Park

    Located within the area of Pa Huai Khayeng and Pa Khao Chang Phueak reserved forests covering a total area of approximately 700,000 rai, some 60 km. to the west of Amphoe Thong Pha Phum on Highway 3272. The land is fertile and complex. The forest hills are believed to be accommodating many plants and wildlife including elephants, mountain goats, tigers, bears, buffalos, deer, civets, and birds.

  • Khao Yai Waterfall

    A big waterfall with 3 levels!! The surrounding forest is peaceful, suits for recreation. Visitors need to walk through the nature trail for 4km. to the waterfall.

  • Dip Yai Waterfall

    Dip Yai Waterfall is situated next below Khao Yai Waterfall. Its stream, which has water all the year round, goes to meet the stream of Khao Yai Waterfall. The forest in this area is productive forest, which is the habitat of many kinds of animals. Traveler can use the same route of Khao Yai Waterfall to get there.

  • Nern Sao Thong

    Nern Sao Thong is a mountain peak bordered Thailand and Burma which Thai Military stake a big flagstaff including a big Thai National Flag to show that this area is a border between Thailand and Burma. Therefore, this area is named Nern Sao Thong after the flagstaff (Sao thong means flagstaff). There are Thai Army and Border Police Officer giving security 24 hours a day, and allowed people to travel for enjoying the scenery and refreshing with nicely cold air. When standing there, traveler can see beautiful sceneries of both Thailand and Burma, and even Andaman Sea if the sky is clear.

  • Khao Khad Viewpoint

    Close to Jok Ka Din Waterfall!! The highest elevation viewpoint is available, which would make you admire panoramically surrounding forest and Jok Ka Din Waterfall.

  • Nang Khuean Waterfall

    It is located approximately 190 KM from Kanchanaburi at Ban Thung Nang Khruan, Tambon Chalae, within the area of Khuean Srinagarindra Dam. It is a large 7-tiered limestone waterfall amid verdant and shady intact natural surroundings. There is water all year round which cascades down high cliffs, some of which are more than 35 metres high.

  • Vajiralongkorn or Khao Laem Dam

    This hydro-electric dam is situated on Khwae Noi River (information confirmed), 6 kilometres north of Thong Pha Phum or 165 kilometers north of Kanchanaburi. The dam is 1,019 meters long and 92 meters high. A scenic reservoir where several resorts (raft houses) are located offers unique opportunities for relaxing with activities such as boat riding and fishing.

  • The Bridge on the River Khwae

    The bridge spans across Khwae Yai River which is a branch of Mae Klong River. During the Japanese occupation of Thailand in World War II, the bridge was part of a strategic railway route to Myanmar in which the Japanese aimed to secure supplies with which to conquer other western Asian countries. It was 415 kilometers long (about 303 kilometers in Thailand and about 112 kilometers in Burma) and passed through the Three Pagoda Pass in Sangkhlaburi District, the northern most part of Kanchanaburi province.

  • Wat tum mong Kon

    Temple is located in a cave which is only assessable via steps flanked by dragon carvings on both sides and it has 95 steps to the top. The temple is well known for the incredible performance of a nun floating on the surface of a deep pool.

  • Art Gallery and War Museum

    Located not far away from the Bridge on the River Khwae is a private museum which features the World Wide II story and art objects such as war weapons, army uniforms, photographs, jewelry, etc. The museum is open daily from 8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. Admission fee is 30baht/person.

  • Somdet Phra Sri Nakharin Park

    Located at Nakarat field Covering an area of 600 rai, the park is situated in Kanchanaburis Agricultural College, tambon Nong Ya, approximately 9 kilometers from town. Local residents also dubs the place as the Stone Garden as there are stones of different sizes and shapes scattered in the park. Local name is Rock garder.
