Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son is the province with high mountains and unspoiled forests. Throughout the year, it is covered with mists. There is a lot of hill-tribe villages in Mae Hong Son, the cultures have been well preserved with a little change since the time of their ancestors. Mountains, forests, natural hot springs, and hill-tribe villages are the main attractions in Mae Hong Son.

Mae Hong Son has a fresh cool weather with average temperature less than 30 degrees Celsius.

Famous Attractions:

Tham Lot Forest Park:

Tham Lot or “Passing Through Cave”, one of the longest cave in South East Asia, has a wide stream running through the one side of the mountain to the other. You can either taking a raft or walking right through this one-kilometer cave. This cave is a home of prehistoric cavemen, you can see the remaining evidences inside the cave. The area is a forest part so you can enjoy magnificently natural scenery here.

Tham Pla Forest Park:

The area is surrounded by natural plants and rivers. “Tham Pla” translates to “Fish Cave” this hollow cave contains a lot of larges fishes.

Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu:

Two famed Burma-style large stupas or “Chedis” are located here at Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu. The temple is sited on the hilltop, Doi Kong Mu.

Wat Phra Non:

“Wat Phra Non” translates to “Temple of Reclining Buddha”. As the name said, the temple is housing 12-meter Reclining Buddha.

Hot Springs:

There are many hot springs in Mae Hong Son. Some of them have a temperature reaching 99 Celsius and eruption as high as 4 meters. There are bathtubs for tourists in some places and as most of Thais do, there are eggs for you to buy and boil it on the hot spring.

Mae Surin Waterfall:

Located in “Mae Surin National Park”, Mae Surin Waterfall is one of the highest waterfalls in the Kingdom of Thailand with the steam falling about 100 meters down.

Huai Nam Dang National Park:

Covering little less than 1,300 kilometers, Huai Nam Dang National Park is the home of various waterfalls such as “Huai Nam Dang Waterfall”, “Mae Yen Waterfall”and “Mae Had Waterfall”. Pong Dueat Hot Spring is also situated here. Many viewpoints along the park area is a good place to see stunning views of Mae Hong Son’s scenery. And if you like to do camping, you can spend the night in tents on the park.

Hill-tribe Villages:

Most of the hill-tribe people migrated from Thailand’s neighboring countries, mainly from Burma. You can visit and experience the different cultures in hill-tribe villages around Mae Hong Son. Most of the villages sell their handmade products for souvenirs, the products are less in qualities but they are unique and some are beautiful.

Here are the hill-tribe villages you can explore in Mae Hong Son
  • Long-Necked Karen (Pa Dong Tribe): The tribe judge the beauty of a woman from the length of her neck and the amount of the rings on it. The girls in this tribe started to wear brass rings on their necks since they are about 5 years old. The number of the rings increases as the increasing of their ages.
